03/27/24: The first two quarters made it appear as if last year's low-scoring affair between the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team and SUNY Potsdam would be an outlier, but a relatively quiet second half had Wednesday's game nearly mirror the score from a year ago, as the Green and Gold came away with a 9-5 victory against SUNY Potsdam at Hantz Field. The Golden Knights edged back over .500 and improved to 5-4 on the year, while Potsdam suffered its second loss of the season to fall to 6-2. Clarkson will head back to conference play on Saturday when it hosts Skidmore College. Clarkson scored three times in roughly six minutes to start the game as Andrew Kearney, Matt Reilly, and Sebastian Geiger all found the back of the net for the Golden Knights by the 8:50 mark of the opening quarter. Potsdam quickly rallied back with two goals near the midway point of the quarter, just 71 seconds apart, to pull back within one. Potsdam again scored back-to-back goals, albeit four minutes apart, in the middle of the second to tie the game for the first time at 4-4. A minute later, though, the Knights would be back on top when Andrew Kearney connected with Sebastian Geiger at the 4:01 mark. Matt Reilly gave the Knights some breathing room with a goal with just seconds to go as well. The final two quarters were relatively quiet in terms of offense, as both teams dropped by roughly 40% in regards to shots, though the shots on goal output was similar. Penalties ramped up in the second half, with only two whistled in the first 30 minutes but eight in the final 30. Potsdam scored a minute into the third quarter but was held off the scoreboard for the rest of the contest, allowing the Knights to slowly pull away down the stretch. Matt Reilly finished with five points on four goals and one assist while Thomas Fiebich added three assists. Sebastian Geiger (2-0-2) and Andrew Kearney (1-1-2) also chipped in two points. Matt Szwagulinski was busy with seven groundballs and two caused turnovers and Jack Garvey also caused two turnovers. For Potsdam, Peyton Walsh and Owen Walsh each contributed two goals. Drew Costello recorded four groundballs and Cole Slavin caused two turnovers. The Knights had modest advantages in shots (39-30), shots on goal (19-13), and groundballs (33-31). Emersion Griffin made eight saves for Clarkson and Saka Thompson stopped 10 shots for the Bears.

03/13/24: From the opening faceoff, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team was in control on Wednesday as the Golden Knights opened up a double-digit lead at the half and never looked back, claiming a 21-4 non-league victory over Plattsburgh State at Hantz Field. The Golden Knights improved to 3-3 overall while the Cardinals fell to 3-3.  The Green and Gold had an overwhelming advantage in shots in the opening quarter (23-1) and in the first half overall (42-5) with an equally impressive edge in shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of the game (29-2). Clarkson had five different goal scores in the first quarter with only Sam Mancabelli and Sebastian Geiger coming through as repeats. The second quarter showed just as diverse of an offense with seven different goal scores among the eight goals, as only Matt Reilly had back-to-back goals while also assisting on the first goal of the period, his 100th career point. By the start of the third, the game was easily in hand, and the Knights put in a number of reserves, though the offense was still humming along, scoring six goals in the final 30 minutes, producing 22 shots. Reilly topped the century mark with a flourish, scoring six points overall on three goals and three assists. Sebastian Geiger notched four points on three goals and an assist, while both Mario Streiff and Sam Mancabelli had three points (2-1-3). Overall, 17 different players scored at least one point and 14 different players produced a goal. st. lawrence overwhelmed by #1-ranked middlebury 19-3

Saints Women's Stories | Schedule/Results | Roster

Middlebury's Susan Rowley (28) snakes her way through the middle and hits the far post for the goal to give the Panhers a 10-1 lead over the Saints in the second quarter. After a dominant start, the Panthers went on to defeat St. Lawrence 19-3 to remain undefeated at 9-0. (Cody Jenne photo)

04/02/24: Liz Evans scored twice to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team, but the top-ranked Middlebury Panthers powered their way to a 19-3 win over the Saints on Tuesday evening in Canton, N.Y. Evans tallied two goals for the Saints, while Neve Ley added the third. Morgan Arakelian and Keira Dodd each recorded an assist on the afternoon, while Ley also picked up three ground balls. Bridgette Gable led the Saints defense with two ground balls and three caused turnovers. The defending national champions made quick work of the first quarter, shutting out the Saints 6-0 after the first 15 minutes of play. Hope Shue scored her second of the game for the Panthers making it 7-0 to start the second, but about a minute and a half later she was followed by Evans' 14th goal of the season to put the Saints on the board. Middlebury added the next five to take a 12-1 lead at halftime. Goals from Britt Nawrocki and Susan Rowley increased the Panthers lead to 14-1 in the third, but a burst of offense from the Saints led to back-to-back goals from Evans and Ley. The Panthers scored once more to close the third and added four goals in the fourth for the win. Rowley led the Panthers with four goals and an assist, while Shue and Anna Spehr both scored three goals. Caroline Adams led Middlebury with eight draw control wins. Courtney Lynn finished with four saves for the Saints, while Gina Driscoll stopped six for Middlebury. The Panthers finished with a 23-9 advantage in shots on goal and picked up 20 ground balls to the Saints' 15. Middlebury also controlled the draws going 19-5 and capitalized on 5-of-6 free-position shots. With the loss, the Saints fell to 2-6, while Middlebury remains undefeated at 9-0.

CLARKSON DROPS 18-16 DECISION TO st. lawrence

Knights Women's Stories | Schedule/Results | Rosters

Clarkson's Julia Lavarnway (8) fires a shot past the St. Lawrence University goalie to cut into the Saints' lead to 12-9 over the Golden Knights in the third quarter. Clarkson fell to St. Lawrence University 18-16. (Cody Jenne photo)

March 7: Over the final five minutes SUNY Geneseo scored four times to turn a tie game into a 12-8 defeat for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team in the Golden Knights' home opener on Saturday afternoon. Clarkson fell to 2-1 on the year with the loss and will take on 20th-ranked Brockport on Wednesday. Geneseo, 23rd in the country in the latest poll, improved to 4-1 on the year. Geneseo scored just 21 seconds into the game and then picked up a second goal less than three minutes later to take an early 2-0 lead, but the two teams traded goals over the next 15 minutes as Clarkson was down by two, 4-2. The Golden Knights pulled to within one late in the half on a score from Aubrey Borgesi at 3:09, and the Knights tied the game at 4-4 less than 30 seconds into the second half when Sydney Roderick found Abby Collins in front at 29:34. The game remained tight for the next 15 minutes as neither team could ever muster more than a one goal lead. Clarkson led by one (7-6) when Borgesi scored a minute into an extra-attacker chance at 20:06, but Geneseo responded with two goals, though they were nine minutes apart, to take an 8-6 lead at 7:03. Roderick wove through traffic at 5:15 to tie the game 8-8 and it appeared as if the game might go down to the wire. Geneseo scored just 14 seconds after Roderick's goal to regain the lead, and Megan Henderson picked up another score at 4:07 for a two-goal advantage for the visitors. Clarkson won the ensuing draw and tried to set up its offense, but a minute later Geneseo picked up a loose ball in front of the goal and was successful with its clear. Over the next two minutes, Clarkson did regain possession but was unable to get a shot off. Geneseo scored an insurance goal with 28 seconds left when Megan Henderson tallied and Geneseo won the ensuing draw, adding another goal in the final second when everyone but the players who combined on it were letting the final clicks go off the clock. Roderick scored five points on three goals and two assists while Borgesi scored three times. Lexi Smith added two points with a goal and one assist. Katie Sergeant caused five turnovers and contributed four groundballs and Sarah Duhaime notched four groundballs while causing three turnovers. Emily Fischer was solid in net, making 15 saves and also contributing six groundballs. For Geneseo, Tessa Doody scored six points on three goals and three assists while Megan Henderson was busy with three goals, three groundballs, three caused turnovers and seven draws. Hannah Marafioti added four points on two goals and two assists and Caroline McGuigan produced five groundballs while Caitlyn Merkel caused five turnovers. Margaret Rosaschi made nine saves for Geneseo.

March 4: A year ago, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team had trouble getting shots past Oswego State's goalkeeper Elianna Sanchez in a two-goal loss. That was the case again on Wednesday, but this time the Golden Knights' defense did its part in limiting Oswego's offense in a 9-5 victory over the Lakers. The Golden Knights moved to 2-0 on the season while the Lakers fell to 1-2. Clarkson will play host on Saturday when the Green and Gold take on SUNY Geneseo at 12:00 noon on Hantz Field. Oswego scored the first goal of the game less than three minutes in, but that was the only tally the Lakers would muster for the entire first half as Clarkson goalkeeper Emily Fischer was up to the task with four first half saves and the rest of the Green and Gold defense forced Oswego's shots off target. At the other end, sophomore Sydney Roderick found a favorite target of the day in Aubrey Borgesi, locating the senior midfielder three times in a stretch of 12:35 to give the Knights a 3-1 lead. Late in the half, Lexi Smith notched a score to put the Knights up 4-1 at the break. Besides the scoreboard, Clarkson only led Oswego in shots on goal at the half (8-5), trailing in shots overall (11-9), draws (4-2), and groundballs (5-4). The Lakers appeared to have solved Clarkson's defense in the early going of the second half as Montana Garrett notched a score for Oswego just 93 seconds into the half, but again Clarkson clamped down with a strong defensive effort, allowing only three shots in the next dozen minutes. The Knights were equally muzzled, with only Roderick finding the back of the net at 22:49 to return the margin to three goals at 5-2. Oswego briefly challenged the Knights again midway through the period with another goal by Beck, but Clarkson responded with two goals just 62 seconds apart from Katie Sergeant and Julia Lavarnway to push the lead back to four. Two-plus minutes later, Lexi Smith converted from a few meters away at the 11:17 mark to give the Knights their biggest lead of the game at five (8-3). Following the eighth goal by the Knights, Oswego controlled possession of the ball as Clarkson struggled to get out of its own end, turning the ball over and allowing the Lakers multiple chances to get back into the game. Oswego took advantage, scoring twice in a span of 90 seconds with just under six minutes to play to get back into the game, 8-5. After a timeout, Clarkson put together two solid possessions, with the second one results in a free-position goal by Abby Collins at 2:45, which pretty much put the game away, considered the Lakers' stunted offense. Emily Fischer finished with eight saves for the Knights, while Roderick had five points on a goal and four assists. Borgesi scored three goals and Lexi Smith had three points on two goals and an assist. Collins and Borgesi each earned three draws for the Knights. For Oswego, Montana Garrett had three goals and Molly Beck had two scores. Elianna Sanchez ended up with seven saves. Oswego had a modest 21-20 lead in shots, though Clarkson held the advantage in shots on goal at 16-13. Clarkson also won the battle of draws at 10-6, though Oswego produced 16 groundballs to the Knights' nine.
